Incense plays an important role in the offertory and the following prayer of consecration. The elements of bread and wine are censed on the altar, the altar itself is censed again, and the Bishop and Sacred Ministers are individually censed. The thurfier then moves to the front of the sanctuary and censes the remainder of the sanctuary party before turning to cense the congregation.
