The chancel and sanctuary, c. 1900

Sanctuary, c. 1900

This photograph shows the sanctuary early in the time of E. S. Hughes (vicar 1900-1926). The high altar, complete with its frontal, stands on a low step. Behind it, the viewer looks up at the Last Supper mosaic, originally purchased by admirers of the previous vicar, Canon Handfield, from the Italian stall in the Great Exhibition in the Exhibition Building in 1880. Above the mosaic is a central window of the Ascension, removed during alteration to the sanctuary in the time of Father Maynard, and now located at the west end of the church. Beneath the other two windows, elaborate panels containing the Creed and the Ten Commandments are visible.
