Seminar 13:

Turning fifty and entering the sixth decade of one's life evokes a wide range of emotional responses from denial through to ridicule and despair. This major period of transition has by and large been ignored, which reflects the social values that idealize youth and denigrate age. Yet several very significant psychological tasks need to be confronted if we are adequately to prepare ourselves for the final transition of death. These include grieving for the loss of youth, embracing uncertainty and facing the inevitability of our own mortality. It is out of this confrontation that we forge a relevant set of values to sustain our being and create a renewed sense of meaning.
