'St Paul' and 'Mysticism' are not normally included in the same sentence. Paul is viewed by many as a rational, systematic theologian 'par excellence' and a reading of Roman certainly suggests that Paul has a powerfully logical brain. However, Paul's rationalism may have been over emphasised. Explorations elsewhere in Paul's epistles present someone who believes strongly that the content of the gospel that he preaches has been revealed directly to him by the risen and ascended Christ and who makes a reference to 'a person in Christ who ascended to third heaven' (2 Corinthians 12.2). This seminar will explore the evidence and ask what grounds there may be for seeing Paul as a mystical theologian and, if we do see him like this, what difference it might make to our reading of Paul's letters.

Paula is a freelance writer and lecturer in Biblical Studies. She enjoys exploring the whole Bible, and lectures or leads groups in devotional settings such as Bible studies, quiet days and retreats. She is Canon Theologian of Birmingham Cathedral, Visiting Lecturer at King's College, London, Associate lecturer at St Mellitus College, London, an Honary Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, and Senior Research Scholar at the Queen's Foundation, Birmingham. She is a Reader in the Church of England and a member of General Synod.
