Thomas Merton OSCO (1915-1968) was a noisy contemplative; an ascetic who loved beer; a social critic who lived in solitude; and a Christian monk steeped in the mystical path of Christianity who was deeply appreciative of the wisdom found in eastern traditions such as Sufism and Zen Buddhism. In many ways, the thought and writing of this twentieth century spiritual and cultural writer have an increasing relevance and value in the present as we try to find a vision of a unitive, authentic and living personal and public spirituality that can live and thrive in the present world. This evening will have room for prayer, silence, teaching, conversation and some good and holy laughter as we move through Merton's prose and poetry so as to find signposts pointing to the God who lives beyond signposts, culture and language.
