The Eye of God: Nicholas of Cusa and the IPCC Report 'I am because you [God] watch me.' God's creative and loving attention to the world lies at the heart of a little book called The Vision of God written by Nicholas of Cusa, a German mystic and Cardinal, in 1453. From the moment it first appeared, the work established itself as a classic guide to Christian life and prayer. Nicholas is interested in helping us to experience God, not simply to believe in God or believe things about God. I think this experiential (or mystical) theology can be highly relevant to our circumstances today. The latest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Report has just been released. It paints a disturbing picture of the implications of climate change for the Earth and all her creatures. In this talk I want to explore what Nicholas of Cusa can offer us as we try to respond to the huge challenges of our time.
