Vicar's Musings for Christ the King
25 November, 2018
Today, the Feast of Christ the King, is the last Sunday of the Church Year. We mark this with a special all-of-parish High Mass, with Children's Church, at the earlier time of 10am after which we will adjourn to the Parish Hall for a light lunch followed by our Annual Meeting. We then have a busy start to Advent, as you can see below. I do hope you can join us for these special times of prayer and worship.
Sunday 2nd December — Advent Sunday
Honouring Governor Charles La Trobe — 11am
On the first Sunday of Advent, at the 11am High Mass, members of the La Trobe Society will be joining us to honour the Founder of St Peter's church, who died on 4th December 1875. After the service, we will lay to rest the ashes of beloved parishioner Dee Hodgetts.
"Walking the Labyrinth" an Advent Study Series — 1.15pm
Starting on Advent Sunday, and then running for four weeks, I will be leading a Sunday Advent course on the Labyrinth. Week one will be an introduction to the Labyrinth as an ancient kinaesthetic method of prayer. In subsequent weeks Carol O'Connor and Fr Greg Davies will be assisting me with Advent reflections and meditations.
"Holding the Light" an Ecumenical Service Remembering Victims and Survivors of Domestic Violence — 2.30pm
Bishop Genieve Blackwell will be joining us as we toll the church bell for every woman killed this year through domestic violence (63 this year to date). All are welcome.
Wednesday 5th December — "The Art of Advent"
A four-week study group will start on the first Wednesday of Advent, in the Vicarage, from 2.30-3.30pm. Carol O'Connor and I will be co-leading this course. We will be studying Jane Williams' book The Art of Advent: a Painting a Day from Advent to Epiphany (SPCK, 2018). Copies of the book are available from the St Peter's Bookroom.
Sunday 16th December — celebrating Fr Colin Holden's life
Fr Colin Holden was an Assistant Priest at St Peter's for many years, and author of a history of our church, From Tories at Prayer to Socialists at Mass: a History of St Peter's Eastern Hill (Melbourne University Press, 1996) published to mark the sesquicentennial of Governor La Trobe laying the foundation stone of our church. Sadly Fr Colin died in 2016. After the 11am High Mass on Gaudete Sunday, Fr Colin's ashes will be interred in the crypt beneath the High Altar.
