Vicar's Musings for Ordinary Sunday 23

10 September, 2017

Today is "Stewardship Sunday" at St Peter's, a time to reflect together on our giving to the parish. In previous years there have been special fundraising requests, or an urgent plea from the Parish Wardens to significantly increase your tithing or planned giving to the parish. This year the Wardens and I have decided that our primary message to parishioners will be a heartfelt: "thank you!" That is not to say that our parish accounts are yet in surplus (although we have made significant steps in that direction) but we are well aware of the kind and generous giving of so many parishioners over the past year, and we want to express our sincere gratitude to you all. Our offertory budget last year was $150k and the end of year forecast is suggesting an income of $160k ... thank you! The 2017 St Peter's Eastern Hill Charitable Foundation Appeal raised more than $54k towards the Lazarus Centre, the Coffee Cart, and other material support for those in necessitous circumstances ... thank you! I think you will agree that 2017 has been a good year for the St Peter's Choir, and thanks to your kindness the inaugural Choral Scholarships Appeal raised some $16k. A portion of this will be spent in 2017-18 directly on scholarships, and around $10k will be used as "seed capital" for a new fund that will be dedicated to supporting our choir into the future ... thank you! On a practical front, the 2017-18 giving envelopes are now at the back of church for members to collect. A summary of how you can give to the parish is in the Parish Giving brochure, which you can find at the back of church or on the Welcome Table. Or just ask! Again, thank you.

The Rev'd Dr Hugh Kempster
