G. Strafford, 1850, engraving,
View of Melbourne from Eastern Hill

Strafford print, 1850

This unusual and small print shows clearly the prominence of the site occupied by the church before the growth of the city under the stimulus of the gold rush. In the opening years of the 20th century, Joseph Summers, the director of music at St Peter's in the 1860s, recalled that in this early period, St Peter's was nicknamed 'St Peter's in the Bush'. St James' pro-cathedral is clearly visible in the middle distance.
