Sanctuary and church, c. 1920

In this photograph, the recently installed double-sided cantor's lectern can just be seen as a dark mass standing in the middle of the chancel close to the high altar – its original position before it was moved during Maynard's alterations to the church. This remarkable work was completed in 1918 by the distinguished German-born woodcarver and cabinet maker, Robert Prenzell. The church is decorated extravagantly with flowers, perhaps from the garden of the Hughes' Aspendale property, 'Segroyt'. Hughes, a keen gardener, was known to come up to the city laden with armfuls of freshly grown blooms for the church.
