The black frontal has been at St Peter's for longer than anyone can remember. It was probably introduced early in the 20th century when Canon Hughes introduced the use of altar frontals, vestments, banners, and so on. It was in a poor state of repair until fully refurbished by Natalie Kellett in 2012. The original heavily embossed black brocade and the red velvet panels were retained and given a new linen backing. The fringing ruche was also replaced at this time. The black frontal is used mainly on All Souls' Day on the 2nd of November, though it is occasionally requested for funerals. |
