The lower central panel of the left light shows a scene in a mission hospital; a nurse is tending patients with a variety of injuries. The inscription names the village of Isivita, even though none of the martyred nurses was based there. For Fr Maynard, this scene continues the theme of Truth in a different context—the doctor and nurse must know the truth about the condition of the patient, and the correct way to treat that condition, if they are to be successful. Bishop Strong, on the other hand, sees this scene as revealing God through the works of Goodness. Two of the four martyred women were nurses: Margery Brenchley and May Hayman. Here, as elsewhere in the window, the figures of missionaries are generic representations of people fulfilling roles rather than attempted portraits of actual people. There is no evidence that photographs of the actual missionaries were available to Waller while he was working on the window. |
