Theological liberalism made very frequent reference to 'the experience of God', and the
expression is still used often in the context of Christian spirituality. Proponents of neoorthodoxy
disliked the expression intensely, tending to set 'faith' against 'experience', and downplaying
talk of 'mystical experience'. Does it make sense today to speak of 'experience of God' ? If so,
what of God can be experienced? And what does 'experience' mean in this context? When we read the
mystics, are we correct or incorrect to read them as speaking about experiences of God? Professor
Kevin Hart will address these questions in his seminar.
Conductor: Professor Kevin Hart, Professor of English and Comparative Literature, Monash University, and teacher at the Monash Centre for Studies in Religion and Theology.
