Seminar 3:
|
Bishop John Bayton will conduct a two-part seminar on the Iconography of Andrei Rublev, the Russian Master and Saint. In Part One he will introduce us to some definitions of Orthodox iconography e.g. translation, transition, intergration, and myth. After a short biography of Rublev, he will discuss why the Icon is a "Moment of Veneration within the Divine Liturgy". In Part Two, the Bishop will interrogate Rublev's "Hospitality" Icon, as relevant now in a Post-Modern Church, not as portraiture but as theology. He will also study Rublev's iconography in the context of the Abrahamic Saga, the politicizing of sacred scripture and 'covenants'. The Seminar will be illustrated with images of "text in context".
