Thomas Merton, Trappist Monk and writer, lived a life in exile. His exile began at his birth and became a pattern for his life and spiritual journey. His exile appeared to end when he entered the Trappist Monastery in Kentucky, yet it could be argued he continued to live in exile until his death in 1968. He spoke into a world in exile through his prose, poetry, art, photography teaching and spiritual direction directly from his on own experience.
