Seminar 2:
An Iconography of Spirituality

Twenty years ago, Bishop John Bayton, then vicar of St Peter's, Eastern Hill proposed the founding of an Institute in which issues relating to contemporary spirituality could be explored within an ecumenical setting.

Bishop Bayton also founded 'St Peter's Icon School' in 1981, and it has been fostered by the Institute. The School has provided a mode of expression for the spirituality of over a hundred students.

In this seminar, after twenty years of 'interrogation', Bishop John Bayton invites us to consider some of the issues related to 'image and reality' in contemporary spirituality. "Is there such a thing as an authentic contemporary Australian Spirituality?" he asks.

Twenty years ago, a mere handful of Australians knew what an 'icon' was. Today, 'icon' is a word of many meanings. Yet the myth of the icon remains.

Bishop Bayton's talk will be followed by a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the Institute for Spiritual Studies. Join us for this happy evening.
