The Cathedral Café: Finding Life over a Caffe Latte and Other Postmodern QuestsIf the Cathedral is where a bishop takes his seat and speaks meaning into the world, the (post)modern equivalent could be the café, where ordinary people take their seat, weaving and inscribing their meanings into the world. This seminar will explore the dynamics of the café and the society gathered around it and its connections with classical political structures (such as the forum and the salon). Key elements of the Christian tradition will also be looked at, including celebration and Eucharist, community and service, mystery and 'the other'. Café society reflects not just the political and cultural temper of our times, but a complex negotiation of the abiding spiritual questions of human beings. We will explore the experience and meanings that participants hold around their own involvements in these social patterns and ask what the Christian tradition can learn from it and contribute to it.
