Seminar 9:

R.S. Thomas' poetry is often described as bleak. His poetry is less an exploration of the absence of the experience of God and more of the experience of the absence of God. Yet in that very experience R.S. Thomas evokes a God intimately and agonizingly near, for whose presence the soul longs. R.S. Thomas, born in 1913 in Cardiff, worked as a priest in Welsh parishes from 1937 until his retirement in 1978. He has published numerous volumes of poetry.
