Seminar 3:
|
James Moorhouse, second Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne (18761886) had a special love of St Peter's, Eastern Hill, celebrating his first and last Eucharists there. However, his work as 'Bishop of Victoria' touched upon all kinds of churches and people, from the centre of the thriving city to the furthermost corners of his diocese. This seminar will consider the extraordinary esteem in which this man was held. He became the best known, and most admired, public figure of the day, sustained always by a provate illumination of the presence of God that was revealed only after his death. A feisty boxer and superb orator, he held hugh audiences spellbound, while never quite succeeding in wresting sufficient money from the men of marvellous Melbourne, who could have fulfilled much earlier his ambitious plans for a cathedral and a theological school. The formidable vigour with which he pursued public causes like irrigation, the Bible in State schools, morality and prostitution, will also be touched on in this seminar.
