Seminar 10:

In his book, How God Acts, Denis Edwards argues that God acts powerfully in creation but that he does this through the mediation of creaturely causes that have their own integrity. This is not a God who does nothing. In his view, God really can and does respond to our prayers, but does so through secondary causes. This is a God who does things for us, who does things that are personal. However, God accepts and works with the limits involved in respecting creaturely processes. This means that when we pray for something that would involve God overturning the laws of nature, God may respond in a way that is for our good but also that respects the integrity of the laws of nature. The God revealed in Jesus is a God who wants our participation. The kingdom proclaimed by Jesus is a participatory Kingdom.
