In 2015 the poet Dante will celebrate the 750th anniversary of his birth. Our Dante-Fest will introduce Melburnians to some of the highlights of what a film of The Inferno, Dan Brown's novel, and new translations will bring in the coming months. We will present the poet as one of the great imaginers of all time, a creator of unforgettable characters, and a mapper of intangible spaces beyond our space and time. It will be a heady trip. We will outline the poem, we will recite and sing portions of it, and we will explore some of the many spiritualities that it proposes. We will focus on obstacles that confront today's Christian reader of this august text, which is soon to become a plaything of mass culture.

Dr William Johnston studied at Harvard University, and he taught European cultural history and the history of world religions at the University of Massachusetts, and the history of Christianity at the Yarra Theological Union. He assisted with the running of Monash University's Dante School held recently in Prato, Italy.
Philip Harvey is a poet, librarian and writer. He runs the Carmelite Library in Middle Park. He is Poetry Editor of the Jesuit online journal Eureka Street and is a member of the Committee of the Institute for Spiritual Studies.
