In recent decades, ecological perspectives have become a significant theme in the theology of creation. We'll ask here whether there might be earlier indications of this growing concern, especially in nineteenth century Anglican thinking. We shall look at B. F. Westcott's 'Gospel of Creation' in the context of the understanding of the natural world in nineteenth-century English popular thought before moving on to relate this to the approach taken to the doctrine of creation by several more recent Anglican writers.

The Rev'd Dr Duncan Reid
served as the Dean of the United Faculty of Theology in Melbourne from 2002 to 2005. He is currently the Priest in Charge of St George's Flemington and a chaplain at Camberwell Girls Grammar School. He is a member of the International Commission for the Anglican-Orthodox theological dialogue.
