St Peter's Eastern Hill IconostasisThere are twelve icon panels, set in the screen in the roof of the church at the end of the nave. At the centre is the Blessed Virgin May with the Holy Child, and St Peter, patron of this parish church of the City of Melbourne since 1847. To the left of Our Lady is St John the Baptist, the one who announced the Messiah. Flanking these three are two archangels: the Archangel Gabriel on the left and the Archangel Michael on the right. St Paul, apostle to the gentiles, is on Michael's right. Two great old testament figures are next on either side: Elijah the prophet and Moses the lawgiver and liberator. St John the Evangelist and St Andrew take us out, on the far left, to St Mary Magdalene and, on the far right, St Lazarus. These two stand as prime examples of the Lord's reaching out to those in need. Taken together, these 12 spread across the full width of the church as a generous and comprehensive welcome into the nearer presence of the Lord. From the left: Mary Magdalene, John, Elijah, Gabriel, John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary, Peter, Michael, Paul, Moses, Andrew and Lazarus. More information is given with the larger picture of each icon that can be obtained by clicking on the thumbnail images above. A project of the St Peter's Eastern Hill Icon School.
